If you’re from another country, or even from another part of the Philippines, one of the things you should learn if you plan to live in Cebu is its history. This is made easier with cities and towns in the island doing what they can to preserve their past and culture.

Prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, the island already had occupants called Pintados. Pintados because most of the men had their bodies filled with tattoes. Men and women also lavished themselves with jewelry. During this period, the people of Cebu did not live isolated lives. They in fact traded with other Asian countries like China, Malaysia and even Japan.

All these changed however with the arrival of the Spaniards in the person of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. While Magellan was later slain in Mactan, an island near Cebu, he had previously been welcomed by Rajah Humabon who had agreed to be baptized and became a Christian. As a result, Cebu underwent a transformation. Churches were built with priests ruling the communities. The people of Cebu also started celebrating fiesta, something that is still practiced with fervor even today.

Due to the abuses of the Spaniards, abuses that were not limited to Cebu alone, the Philippine Revolution against them was started. The Americans later entered the picture and eventually won sovereignty of the Philippines, of which Cebu was a part of.

The history of Cebu was after that, tied with the history of the Philippines. From the Filipino-American war to the Japanese occupation to the Philippines declaring its independence. Even during the period when Martial Law was declared, Cebu also carved a niche in history.

While it may seem to some people that Cebu was rather left out in later years, history has shown what Cebuanos truly are. People who have are principled and even resilient. People who practice high standards of professionalism and morality which has made them “a cut above the rest,” so to speak.
