Cebu City Churches
One of the things you will probably notice while going around Cebu City is that there are a lot of churches. Most popular are the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño and the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, which are located right in the heart of the city. There is also the Sto. Rosario Parish Church, which is found in the middle of downtown and uptown. Even schools have churches affiliated with them like the San Carlos Church and the San Jose-Recoletos Church. These are, of course, just a few of the Catholic churches.
If you are the church going type, do not be afraid or be turned off by Cebu City. The differences of these Catholic churches are not only the locations and the order they belong to but also the architecture. You can visit each church and marvel at the way they were built.
Aside from the architecture, each church also has its own patron saint with varying stories behind them. The Basilica del Sto. Niño for example, is said to have been built on the same spot where Spanish conquistadors discovered a box containing a sculpture of Jesus as a black Holy Child that was said to be left by the expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan. A stone’s throw away from the church is a cross that is said to have been planted by Magellan himself. The Redemptorist church on the other hand was said to be built during the period when Catholics became like sheep without their shepherds.
Despite these differences, the one important thing they have in common is that it shows Cebuanos are God-loving and kindhearted people. Which is one of the reasons that make staying in Cebu City enjoyable.
If you’re ever lost while touring the city, be not afraid. You can approach the nearest passerby and they will be very glad to help you get on your way.
