If you’re ever in Cebu City, one of the major events that you have to look forward to is the Sinulog. Held every third Sunday of January, the Sinulog is Cebu City’s way of honoring is patron, the child Jesus, locally known as the Santo Niño. The festival commerates the Filipino’s becoming Christians.

The term Sinulog comes from the Cebuano word “sulog” which describes the forward-backward motion of the dance done by the devotees which is similar to the movement of water in a river. According to local belief, the dance was first originated during the time of Rajah Humabon. The Rajah’s adviser, Baladhay, had fallen ill and was later found to be dancing and shouting. When asked, Baladhay replied that he encountered a child that looked like the Santo Niño. Baladhay said that while he believed he scared the child, he didn’t know why he was dancing like the water in the river.

The Sinulog festival lasts for nine days with a Fluvial Procession held during the dawn of the eigth day. During the Fluvial Procession, the Santo Niño is carried by a boat containing flowers and candles from Mandaue City to Cebu City. Once it arrives at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, a play is performed that re-enacts the time when Filipinos where first baptized and became Christians. Later in the afternoon, a procession is held in the streets of the city and ends with a mass by the Cardinal.

On the culminating day, a parade is held ina sort of mardi gras athmosphere. Participants of the parade wear different costumes and dance to the beat of drums. The difference of the Sinulog festival from those celebrated in other parts of the country is that the focus is on the historical background of the dance and not the ritual. Currently, the City has been following the theme of “One Beat. One Dance. One Vision.”

Truly the Sinulog is a unique festival because it features both the serious and fun side. One cannot say that he or she has been to Cebu without experiencing the Sinulog.
