Cebu City is famous for being the Queen City of the South, where business and pleasure can intertwine. Colon, which was named after Christopher Columbus, is said to be the oldest street in the Philippines. Located in Parian District, it used to don beautiful cobblestone walkways and majestic stone houses with eye-catching windows made from capiz shells. Only a handful of these old houses are still present, among them would be the Casa Gorordo and the Jesuit Residence of 1730. Horse-drawn carriages, or Kalesas, were once the main mode of transportation. These have been replaced by jeepneys and taxi cabs. But even then, Colon Street cradled trade and commerce in Cebu. Schools, churches, and shops were built in Colon, and most of them still stand today.

Having given way to the modern economic process, the streets of Colon still serve as the melting pot for the various residents and entrepreneurs of Cebu City. Unlike in the Cebu Business Park where majority, if not all, of the businesses cater to high-end customers, Colon is a host to every kind of business that offers services and products to every kind of customer. Hence, explaining why it is always congested.

Colon has become home to a number of Gaisano department stores, several bazaars, flea markets and surplus shops. It is actually a good place to shop for bargain products as the stores catering to different needs are just lined up in walking distances and you can ask the sales personnel for discounts, not counting buying in the malls of course. There are also lots of food places to choose from when you get tired of the shopping and sightseeing. They vary from the affordable cafeterias, fast food choices, and restaurants.

So if you’re in for some shopping or simply want to immerse yourself in intriguing downtown madness, lead yourself to Colon.
