Mactan Island lies southeast of the main island of Cebu. The Cebu Strait separates it from the main island. As of 2000, it had a population of 251,051, majority of which speaks the Cebuano language as the local tongue.Mactan is best known as being the site of the first battle between Spaniards and native Filipino defenders. In this battle, warriors under the Mactanese datu Lapu-Lapu killed the Portuguese explorer Ferdinard Magellan. This battle, dubbed the Battle of Mactan, is the first of countless other battles where Filipinos shed their blood, first for the defense of their motherland from defenders, and next to regain our freedom from foreign invaders. In fact, it is after Lapu-Lapu that a major city in Mactan Island was named.

In commemoration of the battle, a shrine now stands in Punta Engano in honor of Lapu-Lapu. The park is one of the most frequented tourist spots in Cebu. Aside from a huge statue of Lapu-Lapu, the park has a “sutukil” restaurant, and a store selling native trinkets.Mactan Island is the site of the Philippines’ second busiest airport, the Cebu-Mactan International Airport. The airport serves both domestic and international flights, and its terminal has the capacity to hold 4.5 million passengers at the same time. Mactan Island is also home to the Mactan Export Processing Zone, where various international companies have based their Philippine operations. These companies include Timex and Lexmark International, among others.

Mactan Island is known for its many beach resorts and high-class hotels that cater mostly to tourists. The Shangri-La Hotel, for example, is a frequent choice for Japanese tourists because of its artificial beach and fish sanctuary that allows guests to snorkel and swim with fishes. The hotel, located a mere 15-minute distance from the Mactan International Airport, has 547 rooms and suites. It has recently completed an extensive renovation of its facilities.

Another well-known hotel in the area is the Plantation Bay Resort and Spa. An 11.4-hectare property, Plantation Bay boasts of being “one of the largest privately-owned waterways in the world.” Its 460 square feet rooms offer a feeling like being in your own private estate, and include amenities like a mini-bar, electronic safe and split-package air-conditioning. The hotel takes pride in its cuisine consisting of international dishes, and the safety of its location from natural disasters.

Mactan Island is also known as the seat of guitar making in Cebu because of the guitar makers in the province resides in Mactan, specifically in Barangay Maribago. Freddy Aguilar, a well-known guitarist and singer in the local music scene, was known to have used a guitar made in Mactan in his performances. It is said that the skill of making guitars is an heirloom among families, the most prominent of whom is the Malingin family as well as the three sisters Lilang, Susing and Celia. These names are now well-known brand names of guitars made in Mactan. You can view all the low cost housing in Cebu Philippines.
